This is a rare pottery basket made by Carstens Uffrecht of Germany. Founded in 1900, Carstens Uffrecht is known for the Bauhaus influenced pottery that they produced during the 1930s. This basket is made in an oblong shape that is indented in its middle. It has its original rattan handle that is secured onto the pottery basket with brass rings (see close-up photo). The piece is hand painted unglazed and finished in colours of lime green, orange, yellow and two tones of brown. The underside is stamped with the mark of Carstens Uffrecht, Form 409 and with Dek 34. The piece measures 10 1/2 by 6 1/2 by 2 3/8 in height, exclusive of the handle, 6 1/2 including its handle. It is in very good condition with no chips, cracks or wear - this rare Carstens Uffrecht basket has been very well preserved.
